Bubbly Fridays at Emnotweni Sun

There are surprisingly few picturesque places to enjoy a sundowner in Mbombela, but the Emnotweni Sun is one of them. Every third Friday of the month sample a méthode cap classique with canapés and live music for R150, served between 5pm and 8.30pm.

Rottcher Winery

This orange winery has a colourful history — in the early 20th century, since no grapes were available locally, communion wine was made from citrus by the original Mr Rottcher, a German immigrant. Although the family no longer operate from the original citrus farm, that hasn’t stopped them from innovating. Try the brand-new orange gin, or stock up on the Limoncello from the retail store, perfect for chilling out on sizzling Lowveld summer afternoons.

Protea Hotel Kruger Gate

This hotel is situated a stone’s throw from the Paul Kruger Gate (outside of the park), and it’s well worth making it a sundowner pit stop simply for the spectacular setting of the wooden viewing deck and bar, overlooking the Sabie River. Get there early to secure one of the raised hides to spot game.

Sabie Brewing Company

Co-owner and Brewer Shaun McCartney left a career as a forester and fresh-water ecologist to learn how to brew beer. Now, together with his two business partners, he applies his scientific knowledge to brewing beer. There are seven beers on tap in this restored heritage building, and each has an historical tale to tell from the region. Try the beautifully bitter Drevidian Draught, and for something different, the Monkey Apple Cider is a refreshing delight, while the restaurant’s good old pub grub is delicious.
