What do Salvador Dali, JFK, Sophia Loren and Rita Hayworth all have in common? Well they liked to wear Spanish espadrilles – casual summer shoes traditionally made in canvas with woven jute rope soles.

Spain is a far cry from Bree Street but this is where design duo Rizqah Isaacs and Patricia Terre (who hails from Spain) have set up their studio, called Espadril. This artisanal footwear is produced entirely by hand, and each pair is made harnessing traditional methods, but they also have a distinct local flair. The designers have included personality elements in each item, such as soft natural colours (Isaac’s influence), contrasted with bright and fiery colour choices, which comes from Terre.

Can’t find the pair you’re after? Select a few elements (thickness of the sole, type of fabric upper) and Espadril will make up your pair in a few days. Prices start from R600 and look out for collaborations such as a capsule collection with Pichulik for the new season.
