In the new Portside Tower, Borage Bistro serves freshly made, French-style food in the heart of the business district. Founded by entrepreneur Christiaan Vaatz and chef Frank Martz, few restaurants in Cape Town have a better culinary pedigree. Martz trained at the Cordon Bleu culinary school Silwood Kitchen, worked at award-winning La Colombe, Luke Dale Roberts’s The Test Kitchen and then at Heston Blumenthal’s eateries.

The food is  fresh, plated with flair and delicious, and the  bill is reasonable. Try the Eggs Benedict (R60) or the full English Breakfast for R65. Industrial
installations are tempered by plush neutrals  and blonde wooden furniture . Staff are hired based on attitude and passion for food and trained from scratch – although service is inconsistent. Open for breakfast Monday to Saturday, lunch Monday to Friday and dinner on Friday evenings.

At Supper Club, trainee chefs from Silwood take turns to showcase their skills. True to the bistro’s byline, “Let’s Eat Together”, guests from across Cape Town
cliques are seated at communal tables and given a three-course meal for R150 – and the chance to make new friends.
