The best tapas I’ve ever had without fail has been in its place of origin, Spain. However, the newly opened Escondido tapas restaurant in Illovo, Joburg, is not far behind. The eatery is unassuming, with wooden tables and chairs as its setting. The bar, with various Spanish-themed cocktails and the wine cellar, pack a punch.

I enjoyed the peri-peri chicken wings, which had a kick but were not too hot. This was complemented by the patatas bravas, which practically melt in your mouth. tasty entry to the meal was the duck liver pâté (aka foie gras) accompanied by thin crispy bread and a red onion-based salsa.
