At the time of its completion, the grain silo complex was the tallest building in South Africa. Since its spectacular overhaul by the elite The Royal Portfolio group of properties, the historic structure has been given a modern revival and a chance to reign supreme once again, but, this time, as the most coveted address in the country.

The 28-room hotel, originally the country’s biggest holding grain silo for A-grade grain, retains much of its original design structure, emphasising all things industrial for a historically rich and elegant contemporary feel. The conspicuous structure is adorned with one-of-a-kind, diamond-like, pillowed bay windows that give the building its distinctive iridescent exterior. In keeping with The Royal Portfolio’s luxury offering, every room is fit to be a suite: even the entry-level room offers the most gobsmacking views of Table Mountain, harbour, and the Atlantic Ocean. Naturally, the penthouse vistas are essential bucket-list material.

The 11-storey, double-volume property teems with engaging new-age art and the rooms are vividly decorated in owner Liz Biden’s unbridled taste. African art is at the centre of the hotel’s luxe décor, a clear nod to the owner’s long-standing love affair with the arts, and in keeping with the influence from the hotel’s downstairs neighbour — the soon-to-open Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa.

The in-house Granary restaurant, headed by exeutive chef Veronica Canha-Hibbert, previously executive chef at Ellerman House, serves up delicious, unfussy classics with refined brasserie flair. The restaurant is already in high demand, and often fully booked, but, sagaciously, the hotel also offers a café-style menu on the rooftop terrace. The terrace’s 360° views and high altitude offer a unique vantage point to take in the magnificent Mother City sprawl.
Each plush room is designed in an individual style, featuring characterful textiles by The Ardmore Studio and pieces by daring young artists such as Jody Paulson and Pierre Carl Vermeulen. Already, The Silo Hotel has successfully declared itself an icon among the Cape’s luxury jewels. thesilo
