Rose gold, copper, and brass have become the “hues du jour”, not just for  jewellery but interiors, too. Megan Hesse, co-founder of Anatomy Design and HK Studio, shares her metallic trade secrets with us.

W: Why have copper, brass, and gold overtaken silver and platinum when it comes to interior metallic colour trends? MH: People are looking for something that they feel is unique and unexpected in everyday materials – copper and brass offer this. There is a warmth to these materials that platinum, stainless steel, and silver do not share.

W: What should one look out for if they’re wanting to use these materials in their homes? MH: Accessories are a fantastic way to show off this metallic trend. Items such as our copper and brass vessels or new hooks are a perfect way of introducing this luxurious finish into interiors. Brass and copper are also beautiful when used in lighting, as it shows off their natural golden hue.

W: Should one embrace the natural oxidation of copper and brass or should you polish them regularly? MH: This is completely a personal preference. Oxidized copper or brass offers a wonderful natural and earthy feel, while polishing up these materials results in a glamorous and chic finish.

W: Why shouldn’t one use the vessels as vases or fill them with water? What damage will it cause? MH: Using water directly in a copper or brass vessel will result in rusting. The best thing to do is to sneak a smaller vase or glass into the vessel to hold the water.

W: Do you think these will stand the test of time when it comes to trends?
MH: Copper and brass are materials that have fallen in and out of trend over the years, however, I think they are here to stay. The trick is not to over kill this aesthetic by using it everywhere, rather just accenting with it in an interior.
