Smith Studio art gallery in central Cape Town is too established to be described as “new” but it’s gaining traction fast. A difficult space has been cleverly reimagined, and while not naturally disposed to being flooded with natural light, it has been creatively opened up around some difficult heritage requirements, such as the maintenance of the Church Street façade, and the old wooden staircase.

It’s an intimate gallery that dispenses with the common problems associated with large intimidating exhibition spaces, and as such is an ideal space for the show by Dale Lawrence called Look Busy. Look Busy, principally but not exclusively made up of linocuts and acrylic paintings, is an endlessly fascinating muse on idleness and art itself. Is art only valuable if it is meticulous? Is being busy really a virtue, Lawrence asks, in life and in art? It’s worth a visit if you’re in Cape Town – unless, of course, idleness overcomes you. smithstudio.co.za
