As a final chapter to the Macallan and Lalique Six Pillars Collection, Macallan and Lalique have collaborated on Peerless Spirit, a limited edition crystal decanter that encases one of the rarest and most sought-after single malts from the distillery.

Lalique is the famous French crystal maker best known for its heritage (it was founded in 1888), and all its crystal pieces have been produced at its Alsace factory since 1921.

The design of the decanter is inspired by René Lalique’s blown and pinch techniques used for many of the house’s perfume bottles. Each of the decanters have taken inspiration from a specific design or technique used by Lalique. Only 450 decanters have been produced in this final pillar, two of which have been presold to South Africa.

What about the whisky? Macallan is well revered for its craftsmanship when it comes to distilling (not dissimilar to Lalique’s brand philosophy), and its heritage, too, reflects that of the French crystal brand. The estate, established in the northeast Scottish highlands, boasts Easter Elchies House, built in 1700, and the river Spey runs the south border of the estate.

The whisky itself is a 65-year-old single malt that is described as supremely balanced. It is dark walnut in colour, has a medium body taste, and hints of hints of cracked black pepper, cloves and delicately toasted cocoa beans.
