Since it won Eat Out’s Best Asian category for 2014, a table at tiny restaurant Kyoto Garden Sushi has been hard to come by as the Japanese eatery’s popularity has increased exponentially. Los Angeles-born owner Scott Wood says that on some days, he can still hardly believe it. Weaving between tables with complimentary appetisers, he is on hand every evening to take orders and recommend favourite dishes.

These include “any tempura – you gotta have tempura”, tuna tartare and a host of cooked seafood mains. Try the Sauté (R190), in which a range of fresh seafood is individually cooked before being plated and served. The restaurant offers a curated list of good wine, as well as Asian-inspired cocktails, sake and Japanese beer.
