Trenery’s head designer, Jane Grimme, understands the importance of creating authentic clothing, underpinned by modern shapes, quality materials and world-class fabrication.

Based in Melbourne, Australia, Grimme has gained extensive experience in design and fashion retail, working for established labels that value quality, brand heritage and high fabrication standards.

Having started her career in New York as a design assistant for a small retailer, Grimme eventually landed a job as senior design director at Ralph Lauren – under the close supervision of the man himself.

After five years with the eponymous brand, she left New York for Melbourne to raise her young family. She was recruited by Trenery in 2008 as womenswear designer and soon promoted to head designer.

Her experience in New York put her in an ideal position to identify key trends and design focus for Trenery and help develop the brand.

In celebration of the newly formed Trenery Guild, Wanted Online caught up with Grimme to talk about how this initiative fits into the fashion brand’s vision.

What excites you about AW18? I love the modern contrast of our AW18 collection – bold colour and clean, minimal shapes. It feels fresh while retaining a sense of timelessness.

Tell us more about Trenery/Edit. What is it and why is it exciting for a South African customer? This a curated capsule, so we’ve been able to go bolder with silhouettes and colour. As always we’ve focused on beautiful fabrications in silk and wool but the collection has more of a fashion-focused point of view.

Why did Trenery create the Trenery Guild? Collaborating with these outstanding creatives provides a new perspective for us while adding a local South African voice.

What does it mean to you, an artist and designer in your own right? I’m looking forward to seeing how these established and emerging artists interpret the core fundamentals that make up the Trenery brand. It’ll be interesting to see how they bring these elements to life in a visual and tactile way. I’m very excited to see what’s to come.

What do you want to achieve with the Trenery Guild? Working with these artisans is so aligned with our own values of creating beautiful, quality garments and accessories that are made to last. That’s what we are hoping to communicate to our customers in an immersive, meaningful way.

What can we look forward to from Trenery? Exploring what age, beauty and timelessness really means for both men and women. We all aspire to look fabulous, so we want to ignore the rules and the tired clichés, and just celebrate who our customer is.
