Ed's letter | February fever...

If there's one time of the year that I suffer from a touch of Cape Town envy, it’s in February. With the kids back at school, the crowds slightly thinned, and the weather at its peachiest, there can be no better time to spend long evenings
at the beach — or at least sip cocktails with the beach in view.

Then there comes Cape Town’s February diary. It’s pretty impressive: first there’s the Design Indaba, which must certainly rate as one of South Africa’s most inspiring events, when some of the world’s cleverest thinkers arrive on our shores to share their ideas. But Design Indaba is not just a design conference,

it’s a two-week cool-fest of movies, food, shopping, and music too, and worth sharing in — if only for the people-watching. The Cape Town Art Fair is cunningly timed to happen at around the same time, so every interesting art person is in the Mother City too. This year promises to be a special one, so I’ll
be doing my best not to miss it. And of course, there was no way Stellenbosch and Franschhoek were not going to jump on the February band wagon and they put on their wine festivals at this time of the year to celebrate the end of the harvest.

After all the festivities, February also sees the running of some of the most picturesque road races in the country — if you still have the energy to hit the tarmac! So while Joburg is where the heart beats for the rest of the year,

February is most definitely the month to be heading south for a final dose of summer and Mother City fun. My colleague Thembalethu Zulu has put together some exciting new spots to visit if you can make it — head to page 30 for more info.

See you on the beach!
