Amazed at how much better homemade ice cream tastes, Capetonian Kate
Schrire opened The Creamery in October 2011. The business fits in with her desire to work with small emerging farmers to establish a business based on the ethics  and sustainability of her work in the nonprofit world.

The one indulgence I’ll never forgo is... Dark chocolate. Current favourites:
Cocoafair 65% with desert salt, and De Villiers Intense Cocoa 70%.

The grooming staples I am never without are... Bee Natural Head to Toe Balm.

My all time favourite gadget is... My Teeny Turner screwdriver. I can almost take apart a scoop counter with it.

The single object I  would never part with is... I don’t want to sound sanctimonious but things are just... things. I love buying stuff and receiving gifts, but there’s actually nothing I couldn’t live without, or not replace. People are irreplaceable, but I couldn’t pick just one!

My favourite drink... Tea! I love the black tea we serve at our cafés, which comes from Tshivhase estate in Limpopo.

The restaurant I frequent most often is... Hesheng Chinese Restaurant in Sea Point. It’s run by a Taiwanese family, who make the dumplings to order.

Your personal style signifier? Sundresses from Sway Textiles. Sway designs its own fabric patterns and clothing.

The last thing you bought and loved? Another Christo Giles pottery bowl! It’s sculpture for your food.

Your favourite timepiece and why? I’m still wearing the same Fossil wristwatch I’ve had since varsity.  It’s simple, it works and it’s waterproof so you can wash  ice-cream custard off it.

Unforgettable places you’ve travelled to in the past year? Cambodia and Vietnam.

The book(s) on your bedside table? Being Mortal by Atul Gawande.

The last meal that truly impressed you? Massimo’s Pizza in Hout Bay. Always delicious. I love their spuntini (snack) menu. I dream about the crispy, parmesan-dusted polenta bites and the green beans with chilli.

The last music you downloaded? An advance copy of  Nicky Schrire’s new EP, An Education. Even  if she wasn’t my sister, I’d adore her blend of folk and jazz.

The thing you are eyeing next? A  dog!

Things you will always find in  your freezer? Cure Deli streaky bacon, Woodstock Bakery sliced sourdough, homemade soup. And Creamery ice cream; right now it’s granadilla choc chip.

The best gift you’ve given recently? My in-laws did handmade-only Christmas last year. I gave home-grown herb teas, spice blends and pasta sauce.

And the best one you’ve received? A Missibaba turtle handbag, from my late aunt.

The place that inspires you and why? The Creamery HQ. Because every time I walk through the door, I can’t believe how far we’ve come. Also because I love my colleagues, who are loyal, hardworking and very funny.

A recent special “find/discovery”? Lacto-fermented pickles! My fridge is full of experiments. My husband is terrified.

The last item you added to your wardrobe? A jersey I “borrowed” from my sister.

Favourite city and why? Cape Town. Perfect weather, diverse cultures, superb
food, and I can walk on the mountain after work.
